Morocco V: Chefchaouen, the Blue Pearl

My last stop in Morocco was Chefchaouen and you have no idea how much I was looking forward to visiting the wonderful Blue Pearl!

A minha última paragem em Marrocos foi Chefchaouen e vocês não fazem ideia de quão ansiosa eu estava para visitar a bela Pérola Azul !

Since it is located in the north of Morocco, I have decided to visit it on a one-day trip from Fes with Trek Safaris tours. It is a 4h bus ride (each way!!), through the bumpiest road I have ever been at. Needless to say that I have regretted my decision 15 minutes after we left Fes.

However, this city is indeed beautiful and it is very worth visiting so I really recommend, if you have the chance, to stay over one night or to visit it from a closer city like Tanger. There are public buses that take you to big cities, so that might be a good option.

Tendo em conta que está localizada no norte de Marrocos, decidi fazer uma visita de um dia de Fes com a Trek Safaris tours. É uma viagem de 4 horas (para cada lado!) pela estrada mais esburacada que eu já estive. Claro que me arrependi logo 15 minutos depois de termos saídos de Fes.

No entanto, esta cidade é realmente bonita e vale muito a pena a visita, por isso aconselho, se tiverem possibilidade, ficarem uma noite ou visitarem de uma cidade mais próxima, como Tanger. Há autocarros públicos que levam a cidades grandes, por isso pode ser uma boa opção.

We left our Riad in Fes at 8AM and were taken to a minibus, that took us to Chefachouen. When we arrived, we had a mini-tour of the city, that started at a nice viewpoint and walked down to the center of the medina. It was quite interesting to learn some facts about the city and its culture. We were then left at the main square – Uta El-Hamman – and had some free time to explore by ourselves.

Saímos do Riad em Fes às 8h e fomos levados até ao minibus, que nos levou a Chefchaouen. Quando chegámos, tivemos uma mini visita à cidade, que começou num miradouro incrível e depois descemos para o centro da medina. Foi bastante interessante aprender alguns factos acerca da cidade e da sua cultura. Depois deixaram-nos na praça central – Uta El-Hamman – e tivemos algum tempo para explorar.

I think that there aren’t many “monuments” to see, so I just got lost around the city and it was amazing. Chefchaouen surprised me with its beautiful blue streets and craft stores, hidden corners filled with flowers and a lot of cats!

Acho que não há muitos “monumentos” para ver, por isso limitei-me a perder-me pelas ruelas da cidade e foi fantástico. Chefchaouen surpreendeu-me com as as suas lindas ruas azuis e lojas de artesanato, cantinhos escondidos cheios de flores e muitos gatos!

We had lunch at Cafe Clock, which has a great view from the rooftop, really good food, and nice staff.

Almoçamos no Cafe Clock, que tem uma vista fabulosa do terraço, comida óptima e staff simpático.

Chefchaouen is, without a doubt, one of the prettiest places I have ever been to and I recommend it to anyone who has the chance to visit it!

Chefchaouen é, sem dúvida, um dos sítios mais bonitos onde já estive e recomendo a qualquer pessoa que tenha a possibilidade de visitar!

Visiting Morocco III: Trip to the Sahara Desert

After visiting Marrakech, we headed to the long-awaited trip to the Desert.

After making a bunch of research and asking a lot of people who visited, I’ve ended up deciding to do a private 3-day tour with Travel Marrocos, for recommendation of a friend.

I have considered joining a group tour, but the price wasn’t that different than the agency I’ve booked, so I rather pay a bit more for the comfort of a great car, a private guide, and zero worries! 

This is a trip that you may consider doing by yourself, by renting a car, but I wouldn’t do it, because driving in Morocco is quite hard. Also, you get to count on someone who knows the country and avoids any confusion.

Após a visita a Marraquexe, seguiu-se a tão esperada viagem ao Deserto.

Depois de fazer uma enorme pesquisa e consultar  imensas pessoas que já tinham visitado, acabei por decidir por fazer uma tour de 3 dias com a Travel Marrocos por recomendação de uma amiga.

Ponderei ir numa tour de grupo, mas o preço não era assim tão diferente do que fazia esta agência, pelo que preferi pagar um pouco mais e optar pelo conforto de um óptimo carro e um guia privado, sem preocupações.

É importante referir que esta viagem é possível fazer-se sozinho, alugando um carro, mas não recomendo pois, como já devem ter ouvido falar, conduzir em Marrocos é muito complicado e além disso, podem sempre contar com alguém que conhece o país e evita chatices!

 

 

Travel Marrocos, were incredible all along the trip: they answered all my questions, told me more about all the places we have visited and they even adjusted the plan so I could visit one more spot that I couldn’t visit yet, in Marrakesh!

It’s a really long ride, but it is carefully planned for us to stop every 2h/3h.

A Travel Marrocos, foi impecável o tempo todo: esclareceram-me todas as dúvidas, disseram-me mais sobre todos os locais que visitámos e até ajustaram ligeiramente o plano para que pudesse visitar mais um local que me faltava em Marrakech!

É uma viagem muito grande, no entanto, ela está cuidadosamente planeada para irmos parando de maneira a não estarmos mais do que 2h/3h dentro do carro.

 

DIA 1 – ALTO ALTAS | AIT BEN HADDOU| OUARZAZATE |ATLAS STUDIOS

Our guide, Rachid – a humble and nice guy from the Desert (yes, they really know what they are talking about) – picked us up from our Riad in the morning and we started the trip.

When we left Marrakech, headed to the High Atlas, we passed through Bérbere villages and really amazing roads, with a lot of curves. We have stopped on a viewpoint to take a  photo of the amazing view and on the top of High Atlas, which was full of typical stores and products.

Afterward, we have visited a Women Co-op of argan oil. One of the girls gave us mini-tour, showing us the whole process and gave us a tasting of the products – for free.

O nosso guia, Rachid –  um rapaz humilde e muito simpático do Deserto (sim, eles sabem mesmo do que estão a falar) – apanhou-nos junto ao nosso Riad logo de manhã e seguimos caminho.

Quando saímos a área de Marraquexe, em direcção ao Alto Atlas, passamos por aldeias de povos Bérberes  e estradas verdadeiramente incríveis, com muitas curvas.  Parámos num miradouro para tirar uma foto à fantástica vista e no topo do Alto Atlas, onde havia umas lojinhas com produtos típicos.

Seguidamentem, visitámos uma cooperativa feminina de extracção de óleo de argão. A rapariga deu-nos uma mini tour e mostrou-nos o processo, e ainda tivemos direito a uma prova – tudo isto gratuitamente.

We headed to the famous Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, a fortified village considered World Heritage by UNESCO, which was filming set for many famous movies. It’s a really incredible place and different from everything that I have seen. 

Seguimos rumo ao famoso Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, uma aldeia fortificada, considerada património da Humanidade pela UNESCO, que foi cenário para muitos filmes famosos. É mesmo um lugar incrível e completamente diferente de tudo aquilo que já vi.

 

We had lunch in Ouarzazate, the city that is called “the door to the Desert”. It is also the closest place where you can withdraw money and buy food and drinks, so we did and I advise you to do it as well since the trip to the Desert is quite long!

Still in the city, we visited the Atlas Studios (~5€/50dh), which has really cool filming sets. It was an interesting visit that I recommend to any cinema lover.

Almoçamos em Ouarzazate, a cidade que é considerada a “porta do deserto”, onde aproveitamos para levantar dinheiro e comprar alguma comida e bebida. Ainda nesta cidade, visitamos os estúdios Atlas (~5€), que tem cenários de vários filmes, muito giros. Foi uma visita interessante, que recomendo a qualquer cinéfilo.

Next, we went to the hotel, always passing through amazing landscapes, including the Skoura palm grove. We spent the night at Kasbah Panorama Hotel – chosen by Travel Marrocos- that received us very well with good food, nice staff and a bit of Moroccon music after dinner.

Depois, pusemo-nos a caminho para o hotel, passando sempre por paisagens incríveis, incluindo o palmeiral Skoura. Nessa noite, dormimos no Albergue Panorama – escolhido pela Travel Marrocos – que nos recebeu muito bem, com boa comida, um staff muito simpático e ainda um pouco de música marroquina depois do jantar

 

DIA 2 – TODRA GORGES | MERZOUGA | DESERT

After having breakfast with a great view, we followed a road with amazing landscapes, where we saw a bunch of Kasbahs. The first stop was Gorges du Todra, which is impressive – we walked along the river, passing through many locals and sellers.

Depois de tomar o pequeno almoço com uma vista incrível, seguimos por uma estrada com paisagens lindíssimas, onde vimos imensos Kasbahs. A primeira paragem foi  Gorges du Todra, que é impressionante – onde fizemos uma caminhada pelo rio, passando por vários locais e comerciantes.

At lunch, we visited a restaurant (very similar to a house) that was owned by an incredible bérbere family, and it was without a doubt one of the high points of the trip, for me. We ate in a patio, we tried bérbere pizza surrounded by cats. The bill was “how much we thought it was fair” and the women that “waited” us still wanted to paint me a henna tattoo, without any cost. Another incredible demonstration of how kind is the bérbere people.

Ao almoço, visitámos um restaurante (que era muito semelhante a uma casa) de uma família bérbere incrível, sendo, sem dúvida, um dos pontos altos da viagem. Numa espécie de pátio, experimentamos pizza bérbere, rodeados de gatos (porque Marrocos…).  O pagamento era o que achássemos justo e a rapariga que nos atendeu ainda me quis fazer uma henna, sem qualquer custo adicional. Mais uma demonstração do quão incrível é o povo Berbere.

 

As we approached the Desert, the view started to seem arider, we saw fewer villages and fewer people. We made a quick stop to try typical Moroccon clothes and understand its meaning.

À medida que nos aproximávamos do Deserto, a paisagem começava a ser mais árida e cada vez víamos menos aldeias e menos gente. Fizemos ainda uma rápida paragem pelo deserto para experimentar roupas típicas marroquinas e perceber o seu significado.

When we finally arrived at the Desert, we stopped in an amazing hotel for a welcome tea. According to what I heard, each hotel has its own camping in the dunes and they manage everything: transportation, food, staff, etc. We could go to the dunes by dromedary or jeep. We went on the dromedary along with the sunset, accompanied by a really cool guide who made the trip very enjoyable.

When we first saw the animals, we noticed that they are being well taken care off so we decided to go because it is a unique experience, however, I think now I would choose to go by jeep because it didn’t feel right. 

Quando finalmente chegámos ao Deserto, paramos num hotel incrível para um chá de boas vindas. Segundo percebi, cada hotel tem acampamentos e organizam tudo: transporte, comida, staff, etc. O transporte pode ser feito de dromedário ou jipe. Fizemos o transporte de drumedário durante o por do sol, acompanhados por um guia muito simpático que tornou a viagem muito divertida.

Quando montámos vimos que os animais efetivamente eram bem tratados,  por isso decidimos ir porque é uma experiência única, no entanto acho que agora iria de jipe pois não me senti bem com isso. 

 

After the dromedary ride (1h), with a stop to see the most amazing sunset of my life from a huge dune, we got to the luxury camp – we got an upgrade for free by courtesy of Travel Marrocos. We had another welcome tea and we went to check our room which was amazing.

Depois do passeio de dromedário (1h), com paragem para ver o por do sol mais incrível da minha vida desde a duna, chegamos ao acampamento de luxo – cujo upgrade foi feito gratuitamente por cortesia da Travel Marrocos. Tivemos direito a outro chá de boas vindas e fomos para o nosso quarto que era incrível!

We had dinner and then everyone (there were other guests in the camp) went to the lounge area and enjoyed an authentic show of bérbere music, around the fire. At the end of the night, we went on top of a dune and we were talking and exchanging experiences with people from different countries. At the same time, we looked at a starry sky like I could never imagine, I think it was one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. Truly unforgettable!

Depois de jantarmos, sentámo-nos todos (havia mais pessoa no mesmo acampamento) na zona de “lounge” e tivemos direito a um autêntico espectáculo de música bérbere, à volta da fogueira. No fim da noite, fomos ainda para o topo de uma duna, conversar e trocar experiências com pessoas de diferentes países. Enquanto isto, admirava um céu estrelado como nunca imaginei ver, acho que foi das coisas mais bonitas que alguma vez vi. Inesquecível!

 

DIA 3 – MERZOUGA| VALE ZIZ |TAFILALET | CEDAR WOODS | IFRANE | FEZ

The day started as great as the other end, with a beautiful sunrise at 7h which was totally worth it. Then, we had breakfast and hit the road again, on our way to Fès.

O dia começou de forma tão boa como terminou o anterior, com um nascer do sol incrível às 7h da manhã, que valeu totalmente a pena. Depois de tomar o pequeno-almoço, fizemo-nos à estrada, novamente, em direção a Fez.

After the impressive things we have seen in the last 24h, the stops we made didn’t seem much, but we stopped in very pretty places like Tafilalet, Midelt, Cedar Woods (where we saw monkeys!) and Ifrane – the Moroccan Switzerland.

Depois de coisas tão impressionantes como as que tínhamos visto nas últimas 24 horas, as paragens que fizemos não pareciam grande coisa, mas passamos por sítios muito bonitos, como Tafilalet, Midelt, Cedar Woods (onde vimos macacos) e Ifrane – a “Suiça” marroquina.

   

It was an incredible trip and an experience I will never forget, it was totally worth it!

Visiting Morocco I: Everything you need to know before your trip

One of my goals to 2019 was finally traveling outside of Europe, so I went to Morocco! Not only is it really close to Lisbon but also because I was always curious about this culture. So close and so different! Said and done: what a cultural shock!
It was quite hard to choose where to go because Morocco has a lot to offer, there are a lot of touristic attractions. I knew one thing: I really wanted to visit the desert and the rest, would be a bonus!
After considering many places, and knowing I only had 9 days, I’ve decided on the following route: 2 and a half-day in Marrakech – 3 day trip to the desert (with a lot of interesting stops) – Fès, with a one day trip to Chefchaouen.
I planned everything on my own, choosing to take a few tours on the trip, to assure we were safe and comfortable. It was, probably, the trip that I have spent more time planning and worrying about, so I will tell you about everything in separate post, starting with things you have to know before traveling to Morocco!

Um dos meus objectivos para 2019 era viajar, finalmente, para fora da Europa, por isso optei por Marrocos! Não só por ser a um pulinho de Lisboa mas porque sempre tive muita curiosidade em conhecer esta cultura, tão perto de nós e tão diferente! Bem dito, bem feito! Que choque cultural que foi!

Foi difícil escolher onde queria ir, pois Marrocos tem muito para oferecer, há muitos locais que são pontos turísticos importantes. A minha certeza era uma: eu queria ir ao deserto, e o que viesse com isso era bónus!

Depois de ponderar muitos locais, e sabendo que só tínhamos 9 dias, decidi pela seguinte rota: 2 dias e meio em Marraquexe – viagem de 3 dias ao deserto, com várias paragens pelo meio, Fès e um bate-volta a Chefchaouen.

Planeei tudo sozinha, com algumas tours pelo meio, por comodidade. Foi, provavelmente, a viagem que mais trabalho e indecisões me deu a planear, por isso vou falar-vos de tudo em posts separados por destino, começando com coisas que têm de saber antes de visitar Marrocos.

PLAN YOUR DESTINATIONS BEFORE YOU BOOK ANY FLIGHTS

I know this seems obvious… but it’s not, trust me.

It might seem tempting to book a two way trip to Marrakech, just because it is cheaper or because it is the most known destination, but, if you are going with the idea of getting to know more than that city, do you research: What do you want to see, how many days you need, opinions of who has been there… Morocco is a big country and their roads are not good, so try to avoid being on them more than the extremely necessary!

PLANEIA OS LOCAIS A VISITAR ANTES DE MARCAR OS VOOS

Eu sei, parece óbvio… mas não é assim tanto, confiem em mim!

Pode parecer tentador marcar voo de ida e volta de Marraquexe, apenas porque é mais barato ou o destino mais conhecido, mas se forem com ideias de conhecer mais destinos do que aquele em que aterram, pesquisem bem o querem ver, quantos dias são necessários e opiniões de quem lá esteve. Marrocos é um país enorme e e as estradas não são boas, por isso tenta evitar andar mais em carro/autocarro do que o extremamente necessário.

ACCOMMODATION

If you’re looking for the real Moroccan experience, I have to recommend RIADS – the typical houses with beautiful interior patio, very calm and quiet to run away from the messy medina streets! Super recommend!

ESTADIA

Se procuram uma verdadeira experiência marroquina, não posso deixar de recomendar ficarem num RIAD, as casas típicas com pátios interiores, muito calmos e silenciosos para fugir à confusão da medina. Aconselho muito!

TRANSPORTATION

I’ve always heard that Morrocan people were crazy drivers… turns out, they are, indeed! Forget everything you’re used to. It is every man for them-self, especially in Marrakech! For that, and because everything was within walking distance, I pretty much walked all the time.
In Marrakech, you negotiate the taxi rides, but in Fès it’s mandatory to turn on the taximeter and the maximum fee is 30dh (3eur). For short rides, you should always look for official city taxis, because the private companies will always charge more. In Marrakech those are beige and in Fès, red.
During the desert tour with Travel Marrocos, I’ve always felt safe, because we had a great driver and the van was incredibly comfortable, so that’s what I would recommend doing for big trips.

TRANSPORTE

Sempre ouvi dizer que os marroquinos eram malucos a conduzir, e… são mesmo! Esquecam tudo o que estão habituados, é o salve-se quem puder, especialmente em Marraquexe! Por isso, e porque era tudo bastante perto, optei por andar a pé, sempre que possível.

Em Marraquexe, os taxis negoceiam-se, mas em Fès é obrigatório ligar o taxímetro, e a tarifa máxima é 30dh (3eur). Para viagens curtas, devem procurar os taxis oficiais de cada cidade, pos empresas privadas cobram sempre mais. Em Marrakech, são beges e em Fès, vermelhos.

Durante a tour ao deserto com a Travel Marrocos, senti-me sempre segura, pois fomos com um óptimo motorista e a carrinha era incrívelmente confortável, pelo que recomendo fazer para grandes viagens.

MONEY: USE REVOLUT AND ALWAYS CARRY CASH

For those who live in a cave and never heard about Revolut, it is a prepaid multi-coin card (FREE, PEOPLE!). You charge it on the app, with the amount that you wish, and then use it to pay by card or withdraw money without any fees abroad. It has many plans, but with the free one you can take out 200€ per month, without paying any fee, but even if you withdraw more they’re lower than with the regular debit card, but payments are unlimited so whenever possible pay with the card. Some ATMs charge fees, so in Morocco, I advise using Banc populaire and BMCI, who don’t.

In Morocco, carrying cash is also essential: monuments, souks (markets), taxis and even some restaurants won’t take a card, so you better be prepared.

Para aqueles que vivem numa caverna, e nunca ouviram falar do Revolut , é um cartão pré-pago multimoeda (GRÁTIS, MALTA!). Podem carregá-lo através da aplicação, com o valor que quiserem e usá-lo em pagamentos multibanca ou levantar dinheiro até 200€ por mês, sem pagar taxas, mas mesmo levantando mais do que isso, as taxas são mais reduzidas do que com cartões normais, no entanto os pagamentos são ilimitados, por isso sempe que possivel pagem com o cartão. Há alguns multibancos que cobram taxas, no entanto, em Marrocos, aconselho usar o Banc Populaire eo BMCI . que não cobram taxas.

NEGOTIATING: A WAY OF LIFE

As you know, negotiating is very common in Morocco, especially in commerce and taxis.
The trick was always telling a value you are OK with giving, if they didn’t agree, we would say “OK thanks”, turn our back and leave. They would end up coming behind us and agreeing to the value. Be stubborn! We chose to ask locals we trusted (Airbnb host or restaurant staff) what would be a good price for things we wanted to buy.
I’ll give some price examples:
Taxi ride from the Marrakech airport to the center of the medina: 100Dh (also confirmed online, but might be possible to lower down) | magnet souvenir- 10Dh | typical teacups – 10Dh | taxi from Jardin Majorelle to the center of the Medina – 30 Dh.

.NEGOCIAR: UM MODO DE VIDA

Como sabem, negociar é muito comum em Marrocos, principalemente na área do comércio e nos taxis.

O truque era dizer um valor que estavamos dispostos a dar e, se não concordavam, dizíamos “ok obrigada” e íamos embora. Eles acabavam sempre por vir atrás de nós. Ser teimoso é a chave! Nós optámos por nos aconselhar junto a locais de confiança (hosts do airbnb ou empregados de restaurantes) sobre o valor médio para itens que queríamos negociar.

Deixo alguns exemplos de preço:

Viagem de taxi Aeroporto- centro da Medina de Marraquexe: 100Dh (vi online, mas acho que se pode baixar) | Íman- 10Dh | Copos de chá- 10Dh | Taxi do jardin majorelle para o centro da medina – 30 Dh.

THE PEOPLE

Moroccan people are, generally, very nice and like to help, but you got to be careful. I would say that intentions differ according to the area you are at.
In Marrakech and Fès there is a lot of tourism, so it’s normal that people try to trick you, especially inside the Medina. There is a lot of scams: there’s one where they say the place you’re looking for is “this way” or it’s “under construction” and try to “show you the way” and take you through little streets until you don’t know where you are and then ask you for many to show you the way back; it’s also pretty common to ask for money of you take photos of them (which they really don’t like!), or to their animals or stalls. In these cases, the only advice I have is: thank them but ignore and get on your way.
Regarding the Berbere people, that i have the chance to meet on my trip to the desert, they’re really welcoming and nice! In just loved getting to know their culture!

O POVO

O povo marroquino é, no geral, muito simpático e gosta muito de ajudar, mas é preciso ter cuidado. Eu diria que as intenções dos marroquinos diferem consoante as zonas.

Em Marraquexe e Fès há imenso turismo, por isso é normal que haja pessoas que tentam enganar, principalmente dentro da medina. Há inúmeros esquemas: se eles percebem que o turista não sabe onde está, levam-no por ruelas até estar definitivamente perdido e pedirem dinheiro; É muito comum também pedirem dinheiro se tirarem fotos a eles (o que eles não gostam nada!) ou animais/bancas,etc. O único conselho que tenho a dar é: Agradecam, mas não dêem confiança e continuem o vosso caminho.

Quanto ao povo Bérbere, que tive oportunidade de conhecer na minha viagem ao deserto, é muito simpático e acolhedor! Adorei conhecer a cultura deles!

WIFI, PLEASE!

If, like me, you were worried about the no roaming thing, chill!
You can get a SIM card literally on the way out of your flight, at the airport. I got it at orange, for just 100Dh (10€) with 10Gb but you also have the option of unlimited data for 240Dh (24€). For God’s sake, just don’t go out without Google maps! Note: Only accept cash.

WIFI, POR FAVOR!

Se, como eu, estavam preocupados em não haver roaming, descansem! Podem comprar um cartão SIM, literalmente à saída do voo, no aeroporto. Comprei na orange, por apenas 100Dh (10€) com 10gb mas tem também a opção de dados ilomitados, por 240 Dh (24€)! Por Deus, só não andem na rua sem google maps! Nota: apenas aceitam o pagamento em dinheiro.

FOOD!

Tagines, tagines and more tagines! My favorite dishes were Briwat (cheese samosas, YUM!), kafta tagine (meatballs with egg and tomato sauce) and obviously couscous!
Concerning drinks, I must, obviously, talk about Morrocan tea, which is delicious, and don’t even get me started on the beautiful tea sets they have, and the amazing sweet orange juice!
Because it is a Muslim country, it’s very hard to find alcoholic drinks – just in specific restaurants and supermarkets, which are also rare, you can only find them outside the Medina, because inside there are only souks (markets).

Tagines, tagines e mais tagines! Os pratos que gostei mais foram Briwat (chamuças de queijo, YUM!), tagine de kafta (almondegas com ovo e molho de tomate) e, claro, cuscus !

Quanto a bebidas, tenho de realçar, claro, o chá marroquino, que é delicioso, já para não falar na beleza dos serviços de chá deles, e o sumo de laranja, que era mesmo docinho!

Por ser um povo maioritariamente muçulmano, é muito difícil encontrar bebidas alcoolicas, apenas em restaurantes específicos e supermercados – que também são raridades – só se encontram fora da medina, visto que eles compram tudo nos souks (mercado).
